Giving Woodworking A Whirl

What's this? My route along the Crescent Beach shore often includes birds flitting about ... but this rainbow-hued apparition is not an everyday sight.

The Whirly Bird lawn ornaments animated by ocean breezes at the edge of the path tend to come out yearly and briefly as a sure sign of summer.

Two retired gents in the neighborhood discovered a creative way to keep active. Their handcrafted wooden ornaments spilled out onto the grassy lawn along the way.

The craftsmen enjoy fashioning objects with parts that move in the wind, from helicopters and sailboats to a variety of birds.

Real life Canadian geese are common to the area, although not at the beach.

Parrots are not native ...

but blue jays and the rare bluebird might be spotted.

It looks like one real bird somewhere is minus a luxurious feather. It fluttered magnificently on the cap, however.

When I went back a day later the only Whirly Bird I saw was this eagle spinning its wings on a fence.

  6. They look beautifully crafted. I love the feel of wooden toys. I would love to have one of those in my garden so I could watch it move in the breeze.

I was rather excited when I saw the whales, but we did not capsize!

  9. People who craft with their hands really inspire my admiration. These gentlemen have an eye for colour too. One might think they had met Penelope and taking a page from her rainbow book :) Lovely post, Penelope, and the feather in the hat was a humorous bonus. I'm still picturing a bird with one missing feather.
