On Opposite Sides Of The Fence

DANCING reflections in a pond by a rushing stream sends a message. The brightly painted fence I photographed recently at the local cemetery acts as a safety barrier, a metaphor, and my reason for linking to GOOD FENCES.

Perhaps those who continue to live inside our heads and hearts after passing away also dwell like flickers of light in some eternal realm.

Although no one can climb over from here to there until the time is right, the timing was decidedly wrong when a family friend in her early twenties lost her life to Cystic Fibrosis several years ago. I visited her gravesite on the day she should have been celebrating her birthday.

We seem so close yet so far away. "Life and death are one thread, the same line viewed from different sides," according to the long departed philosopher Lao Tzu who speaks to us today from beyond the grave.

Soft Light & Sparkles On Valentine's Day

A MOVIE, DINNER FOR TWO and walk on the beach in fine weather ... the world felt extraordinary with additional sparkles permeating Valentine's Day.

In The Theory of Everything, physicist Stephen Hawking is in the middle of giving a speech when he spots a pen on the floor dropped by someone in the audience. He suddenly imagines himself standing up from his wheelchair and walking down the stage stairs to nimbly pick up the pen. Such a simple yet complex task magically portrayed in the movie is something Hawking can only dream of doing. Luckily, despite having a severe motor-neuron disorder, Hawking has an brilliant mind and the entire universe to ponder.

Functions of the human anatomy are under-appreciated until the body turns on itself. I am reminded that simple pleasures are at the heart of enjoying life and nothing about existence should be taken for granted, from a good laugh and shared meal to a brilliant idea and golden sunset at the end of the day.
