Hula Hoop Girl Enthralls At Granville Island

MY DAUGHTER AND I were enthralled by a girl doing hula hoop tricks at Granville Island in Vancouver yesterday.

She spun the orb around her neck as if it were a large necklace.

Without pause ...

she spun ...

and twirled ...

and told some jokes.

She delighted the crowd with her enthusiasm and charm.

People applauded her dexterity and wit.

The importance of the hula hoop that aided her performance should not be overlooked. Invented in the late 1950's, the toy helps exercise the limbs and is not just for kids. The hula hoop name starting with the letter "H" inspired me to give ABC Wednesday a spin this week with this post.

  1. Neat post! She is really good with the Hula Hoops. I found that this is not a skill like riding a bike that stays with you. I tried to hoop again last year after a 35 year break and let me just say the exercise I had picking the hoop back up was very good!

  2. Wow, I'm impressed. I loved hula hoops. When I got one for my daughter, she never got into it that much so I'd go out on the deck and play with her hula hoop. It used to crack her up. Now that I think of it, I wonder what ever happened to that hula hoop. Maybe I'll dig it up and see if I can still do it. Not fancy moves like shown here, but the basics. Carver, ABC-Wed. Team

  5. Well, it certainly is a great H! I used to be able to do one hoop, but only ever around the waist though, no neck and certainly no feet!

  6. She pretty talented, looks like a fun show. I was able to use one pretty good as a gril, but have tried lately and cant make it work at all.

  7. I remember getting a hula hoop right after it came out. Now that sure dates me. Also I remember the beginning of Barbie. Some hits don't disappear. - Margy

  8. That's pretty impressive. I can't even swing a hula hoop around my waist for more than one or two rotations! Cool H.
