When The Sun Came Out

WHEN THE SUN came out one recent morning the world's woes seemed a little lighter. Petals planted along a fence stretched to greet the rays.

Freshly washed dresses clinging to a clothesline soaked in the warmth.

Windows of a small abandoned building caught slight slivers of the glow.

Horse and rider came out to test the Crescent Beach waters.

Though I do like the rainy days, I was nonetheless bedazzled by the sun as it penciled mysterious tree shadows onto the pathways where I walked.

Beneath the nearby pier, sun reflections danced brilliantly like twinkling stars.

Calming Contemplation At Crescent Beach

Contemplation is the eye of the soul and the highest form of happiness some say. Pondering life and our place within it happens everywhere but is uniquely common at the rocky log-strewn Crescent Beach shore. Until a train whistle blasts past the morning mist, it's where walkers go for a moment of bliss.

Drifting Into View

The billowing cloud-surfer drifted into view on a windy wintry day. It swooped and swirled like a vibrant giant wing giving colour to the sky and a bumpy ride to the sea-surfer below who was tethered to its strings.

Nature's Passing Glory

Tsawwassen Mills Mall on Native land has shops galore enhanced by nature-inspired art. The bird carving pinned like butterfly wings to a post is stuck there while onlookers reflect on its beauty and nature's passing glory.

Lost In A Crowd

A SPIDER'S sticky thread caught a loosened leaf. The lone leaf in rare glory spun and swayed like a dancing star before getting lost in a crowd on the ground.

Horsefaces

THE HORSEFACES I see during my walks are far too cute to be ignored. The first (pictured above) decorates a fence. It's one of many seahorse images scattered throughout Crescent Beach. You can see more HERE.


The second is an elaborate Halloween display of the Headless Horseman at the entrance to Ethical Addiction Apparel in Ocean Park, a store that sells clothing made from bamboo organic cotton with an aim at respecting the environment.

I wished for an apple to give this third sighting that pranced prettily into view.

Clancy's Tea Cosy, White Rock, BC

A visit to Clancey’s Tea Cosy in White Rock, BC, made it clear to me that some beverages transcend boundaries. The British have a deep love of tea that seeped into North American culture. The Japanese ceremonial aspects took serving and drinking of tea to a level beyond relaxation as expressed in the quote above by scholar and professor of Buddhism, Daisetsu T. Suzuki (1870 - 1966).

My Dad The Unsung Hero

MY DAD was an unsung hero like so many immigrants. He never built me a dollhouse or taught me how to swim but he tried his utmost to provide for his family in an unfamiliar land. He died when I was fourteen and was seriously ill for many years prior. A university professor, philosopher, insatiable reader, musician, religious scholar and certified accountant in Europe, he was an educated man unable to apply his non-English degrees and skills in Canada. The farm he operated in Quebec failed so he labored at other jobs under harsh conditions. Falling deathly ill in the process, his earlier riches seemed like a faraway dream. Perhaps he lost his pride and sense of personal worth along with his health. Now all these years later I understand his bravery and the bravery of those currently seeking freedom from political unrest and tyranny of all kinds. I was born in Canada but the challenging early history of my parents has made me empathetic to the plight of immigrants everywhere.

Two Drifters Meet Beneath Brooding Skies

Brooding clouds filled the sky like billowy curtains over a beach star. The driftwood configuration stood upright centre stage on the shore at Crescent Beach amid more common logs haphazardly strewn along the sandy floor.

A "head", scorched perhaps from having once been in a camp fire, somehow became attached to the body of the upright piece. Over time, through shifting skies and changing tides, the two random travelers drifted to each other to become one artistic piece of extraordinary stature from every angle.
