A Half-Full Thanksgiving

“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” - William Arthur Ward

A PRETTY TABLE SET to stimulate the appetite in a room rippling with occasional laughter is not a big event but something I truly did appreciate this Thanksgiving holiday. One day has been designated to remind folks to be grateful in a world that has its equal share of joy and sadness. It is odd, though, how it is often easier to express a complaint.

I sometimes wonder ... is there enough good news being spread around kitchen tables and a focus on the glass being half full instead of empty? Perhaps the things I take for granted are the very things I need to say thank you for and acknowledge more. According to author William Arthur Ward, “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.”

  1. Very good thought, I need to put that one in my head for awhile and shake it out every now and then....

    Happy Thanksgiving.

  2. It is a pretty table setting, though it seems you have foregone the typical turkey dinner.

  3. A very pretty table, nice post to think about. We all said last night that we have a lot to be tankful for and count out blessings.

  5. I agree with you more than 100%!! One fact seems to have two faces in negative and affirmative states. I always want to take the happier one.
The words of William Arthur sank into my heart deeply.
    Happy thanksgiving day!

  6. You have a perfectly lovely dining table, penelope. I do love all the stuff including the dishes you cooked. How nice it is to enjoy meals with the glances at the seasonal views from the window. This post makes me feel so happy, which I appreciate. There are many things I am thankful for but forget to express. The quoted words is so true. Thanks for the reminder.

  7. Hi stardust, as always thank you for your kind words! This is a lovely table I did not set, however, as I was a guest at this welcoming and cozy home. :)

  8. You are right that we ought to focus on the positive rather than the negative happenings in our lives. I like your positive thoughts here.

I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

  9. Things are bleak world wide and here. The absence of good leaders accentuates this. There are however some good things, but the lesson is the need for people and not politicians to run things. Boom & Gary of the Vermilon River, Canada.

  10. Thoughtfulness rang through this post, Penelope, and as happens so often, I found myself nodding my head in agreement. What a lovely warmth to the table setting and to your photograph, and I could have sworn I heard the occasional ripples of laughter too.
