Drifting Into View

The billowing cloud-surfer drifted into view on a windy wintry day. It swooped and swirled like a vibrant giant wing giving colour to the sky and a bumpy ride to the sea-surfer below who was tethered to its strings.

Brrr ... Braving Winter's Chilly Waters

"Come on in. The water's freezzzzng cold!" the first to run in seemed to say. It was no sooner in than out at the New Year's polar bear swim at Crescent Beach.

Cotton Candy Cloud

CLOUDS blown by the breeze usually float together but sometimes one rises above the rest. Not pink or blue like candyfloss, the top cloud still managed to look sugary sweet suspended over Crescent Beach. Did it taste like rain? Probably not. The cumulus cloud, meaning "heap" in Latin, of liquid, gas and solids was a lofty mix unlikely to produce rain. Dark and dreary versus light and cheery is my best go-to unscientific guess for any rain-test. This mass of fluff looked so weightless that if I had strings I'd pull it down and take it with me.

EQUALITY, DIVERSITY, INCLUSION

TAKING PART in the Woman's March in Vancouver, BC, on a Saturday morning in January was a highlight in my life ... the sense of solidarity was empowering. I've been wondering what to do with the sign I held at that event. The words say Equality, Diversity, Inclusion. Perhaps framing it will keep the memory alive longer. Better still, if I don't hang it on a wall, I might have a chance to use it at a future rally against sexism and intolerance. Peaceful resistance is rarely a one-time deal. Meaningful impact requires persistence.

The weather had been cold but more or less kind with a gentle drizzle at the event. Diverse climate was in the cards, however, for Vancouver and the Greater Vancouver regions that got their equal share of snow this year. It's rare for southwest BC (where there's barely any, to no, snow in winter) to be included in March's snowfall weather reports. But here’s what I woke up to (below) this March 5th. The snow surprised the birds, the buds and me. Winter persists.

The grinning teddy bear fashioned by the clumpy snow (above) made me smile but I'm glad the rain and warming weather will soon melt us back into spring.

Bleak Years Ends With A Beautiful Afterglow

THE YEAR 2016 was filled with bad things happening in the world too numerous to contemplate here. Nature walks were a soothing balm during sad news events but our outdoor excursions were limited this past while due to snow and ice. Recent milder weather just days before the New Year, however, warmed up the pathways and scenery. At this writing it looks like the bleak year will end with a beautiful afterglow. Hopefully, it's a good omen for brighter days to come.

White Rock Apartments Up In Smoke

APARTMENTS that until recently were lovely homes suddenly went up in flames and became burnt rubbish in White Rock. The City placed blue fencing around the disaster area for safety.

Unfortunately, no fence could have stopped the initial fire, that started at an adjacent construction site, from spreading to the complex. What caused the first spark is still a mystery but is thought to have been set deliberately at this writing. Dry weather mixed with light breezes no doubt fueled the flames. Read more about what happened HERE.

Battling the blaze depleted the small city’s reservoirs and caused a temporary boil advisory for drinking water. Neighboring Surrey supplied additional water and multiple firefighters to help extinguish a disaster that became a wake up call about local preparedness during catastrophes.

When The Sun Came Out

WHEN THE SUN came out one recent morning the world's woes seemed a little lighter. Petals planted along a fence stretched to greet the rays.

Freshly washed dresses clinging to a clothesline soaked in the warmth.

Windows of a small abandoned building captured a bit of the glow.

Horse and rider came out to test the Crescent Beach waters.

I like the cloudy, rainy days but was nonetheless dazzled by the sun as it penciled tree shadows onto the pathways where I walked.

Beneath the pier, sun reflections in the water twinkled at me like stars.
